About me
Elc Estrera, PhD, works in the Data, Research & Accountability Office of the 15th largest school district in the nation (and the largest in North Carolina). He works with district leaders to identify opportunities to leverage data--especially longitudinal administrative data--to make evidence-based decisions that affect upwards of 160,000 students and 22,000 employees. As part of this work, Elc initiates and leads research(-practice) partnerships with university faculty and advanced graduate students that focus primarily on topics pertaining to human capital (i.e., the district's workforce). One stream of his work has examined the relationship between teacher-principal demographic match and potential and actual teacher turnover. Elc is also interested in the ways that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected schooling. At this year's Convening, he will be presenting on how much the pandemic has affected high school graduates' postsecondary transitions into college and the workforce.
Elc spent way too many years in school: he holds an MA in philosophy from Virginia Tech, an MPP from the University of Chicago, and a PhD in public policy from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Elc was a Cohort 11 Data Fellow (2019-2021), and this will be his first in-person SDP Convening! When he's not doing data stuff, you can find him hanging out with his daughter, partner, and his partner's old but spry Shiba Inu; playing tennis and the electric guitar; and discovering food and activities in and around Durham, NC. Finally, Elc is the child of Filipino immigrants and is trying to perfect his mom's fried eggplant recipe.
